Kasigau Trustlands. After settling
in you will be introduced to the team

ecological sampling methods to learn

The success of any conservation programme
depends on the stewards of the wilderness:
the local people. At Taita Discovery
Centre (TDC), we ensure that they
benefit from the conservancy via our
Community Service Projects. This also
provides a genuine cross-cultural
interaction between students and Kenyans.

5 Human/Wildlife Conflict
& Environmental Utilisation
Day
Today you go out to visit some of
the community initiatives to fend
off elephant damage to crops and other
wildlife threats to this rural existence.
We will investigate the possibilities
for non-consumptive commercial utilisation
of our environment.

6 Craft & Culture Day
Today we examine the cultures of Taita-Taveta
District and beyond, many of which
are vanishing or have already disappeared.

Day 7 The Cloud Forests of
Kasigau
You take a full day to visit and climb
Kasigau Mountain. This fascinating
outcrop hosts endemic bird and insect
species and an enviable range of mature
hard-wood trees.

8 Tsavo Elephant Day
Tsavo provides an interesting case
study on the management of elephants
as in the 50's debates ranged on whether
or not to cull the rapidly expanding
population. In the 80's it was also
the scene of mass poaching of elephants
and rhinos. We
spend the day with an experienced
elephant research assistant in Tsavo
National Park learning research techniques
and participating in the Centre’s
ongoing research project into elephant
behaviour patterns.

9 Lake Naivasha, Rift Valley
After
saying farewell to the team you drive
to Naivasha via Nairobi into the floor
of the Rift Valley arriving at Elsamere
Conservation Centre late afternoon.
Elsamere is a haven for nature lovers
and the former home of the late Joy
and George Adamson who became famous
for their pioneering conservation
work and relationship with the lioness
Elsa.

10 Hell's Gate & Crescent Island
Our
day begins with a stimulating overview
on the Ecology of Rift Valley lake
using first hand research information.
Lake Naivasha is the highest and only
fresh water lake in the Rift Valley
covering 150 sq Km at only 6 metres
deep.
In the afternoon we game drive at
Hell's Gate National Park. The park
is characterised by diverse topography
and geological scenery.

11 Maasai Mara
After
breakfast you will drive across the
Rift Valley floor and gently ascend
the escarpment to arrive on the rolling
plains of Maasai Mara: undoubtedly
the greatest wildlife experience of
all.

12 & 13 Maasai Mara
The next two days are spent exploring
Africa's foremost wilderness extravaganza
and the Maasai culture. The backdrop
of golden plains, studded with solitary
twisted thorn trees, grazed by enormous
herds of plains game, stalked by their
predators is simply incredible.

game drive you depart to Nairobi via
the Rift Valley arriving in time for
