Day 1 Nairobi
You will be transferred by bus, departing Nairobi at 0800 hrs to Rockside Camp on the Kasigau Trustlands. On arrival you will be introduced to the team and briefed on safety tips in the wild.
1 Overnight Rockside Camp (FB)

Day 2 Kasigau Villages
After breakfast you will spend the morning on a guided orientation of the 170,000 acre conservation area managed by Kasigau Conservation Trust, introduction to Taita Discovery Centre's (TDC) program and general familiarisation with the local eco-system, rural community structure and customs. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the rural villages in the Kasigau Wildlife Trust lands at the foot of Mount Kasigau. You will stay in simple accommodation specially built in the style of the local homes, known as the Kasigau Bandas. Participants will prepare their own food and get involved in a number of community based development projects under the guidance of our community liaison officer.
1 Overnight Kasigau Self-Catering Bandas

Days 3 & 4 Community Service
2 days of Community Service in Kasigau Villages. The success of any conservation programme depends on the stewards of the wilderness: the local people. We ensure that they benefit from the conservancy via our community service projects. This also provides a genuine cross-cultural interaction between participants and Kenyans. Projects vary according to the priorities of the local communities.
2 overnights Kasigau Self-Catering Bandas

Days 5 & 6 Wildlife & Waterhole Monitoring

2 days of Wildlife & Waterhole Monitoring in Community Conservation Area. You will visit some of the community initiatives to fend off elephant damage to crops and other wildlife threats to this rural existence. Debate over the pros and cons of wildlife tourism will be led by your guide.

2 overnights Kasigau Self-Catering Bandas

Day 7 The Cloud Forests of Kasigau

Optional hike to the cloud forests of Mount Kasigau or day at leisure. You take a full day to visit and climb Kasigau mountain. This fascinating outcrop hosts endemic bird and insect species and an enviable range of mature hard-wood trees.

Day 8 Tsavo East National Park

Full day game drive with research insight to Tsavo East Natonal Park. Tsavo provides an interesting case study on the management of elephants. In the 50's debates ranged on whether or not to cull the rapidly expanding population. In the 80's it was also the scene of mass poaching of elephants and rhinos. You spend the day with an experienced elephant researcher learning research techniques and participating in the Centre's ongoing research project into elephant behaviour patterns.
