We walk in the Mt Kenya Afro-alpine environment with the opportunity of fishing in nearby Lake Alice. We are surrounded by the spectacular alpine peaks of Mt Kenya and endemic plants such as Lobelia, Groundsel and Senecio, fascinating giant heathers and everlasting flowers all perfectly adapted for these unique climatic conditions, experiencing both summertime and wintertime temperatures in a single 24 hour period. 1 overnight Lake Rutundu Cottages Day 3 Lake Ellis After a hearty breakfast of porridge, eggs , fruit, bread we start at 8.30 am, for a 6 hour hike taking in the beautiful Nithi falls, & The Gates,- a large cleft in the rocks, before trekking to Lake Ellis, arriving in time for lunch in camp on the lakeshore. In the afternoon you can rest or explore the beautiful surrounding area, hiking to Mugi Hill & Kilingo. Lake Ellis has brown trout in its crystal clear waters, & can be fished with a permit from the fisheries department. 1 overnight Mountain Camp, Lake Ellis Day 4 Hall Tarns Today is a slightly more strenuous day, due to the altitude, However, this is more than compensated by the stunning views afforded of the Gorges Valley, the Temple, & Lake Michaelson. The Hall Tarns is a group of 5 small mountain lakes poised high on a bluff above the Gorges valley. The Gorges Valley is a spectacular sequence of gorges, lined with massive cliffs, & pitted with caves. The Temple is a sheer cliff 300m high, & at its base lies the almost circular Lake Michaelson. Your camp is located on the fringes of the Hall tarns with the majestic amphitheatre of peaks surrounding it. You will arrive for a late lunch, & may spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring the tarn lakes & surrounding area. Early dinner is served, and extra layers of clothing are now required to ward off the cold. 1 overnight Mountain Camp, Hall Tarn Day 5 Point Lenana & Makinder’s Hut The start for the ascent of Lenana (4985 metres) will vary from group to group, some favour climbing up the scree in the early hours of the morning when it is still frozen[ and dark], and summit in time for sunrise. Whilst other groups prefer to leave at about 5am so that they can appreaciate the scenery. From the Summit of Pt. Lenana, especially at dawn, the views are spectacular. If it is really clear, far off towards the South, you can sometimes see the faint dome of Kilimanjaro. Descent to Austrian hut is along the crest of the ridge with the Lewis glacier, & the peaks to your right. There are toilet facilities at the hut, & it is a good place to have a break after all your hard work. From there, you descend steeply for around 2 hours down the loose scree to Makinder's hut (at 4200 metres]. The rest of the day is spent at leisure.
